Why do the natives of northern Europe have less skin pigmentation than any other population on earth? Why are their hair and eyes also depigmented? The latitude of the Baltic region receives insufficient UV for vitamin D synthesis. At the same time, it is uniquely warm enough, due to the Gulf Stream, for a grain-based diet lacking in vitamin D.
